Do you hear the call of the Selkie song? They say sometimes on a cloudless night, if you’re quiet and hide yourself well, you will see the Selkie women rise up out of the ocean, shed their dark seal skin and dance naked in the sand. If you capture one of those skins the Selkie will be yours as she can’t return to her home without it. They say their song is haunting, the one they sing of their home land deep under the waves.

I heard a fisherman’s wife once talk of a handsome Selkie man, hair dark as seaweed and eyes as stormy as a winter sea. If you cried seven tears into the ocean he would appear on the land and make any lonely wife happy for one night.

The legend of the Selkie folk have mainly been collected from the Northern Isles of Scotland but range as far as Ireland and Iceland where the people have an affinity with sea. In Orkney Lore, a Selkie is said to be characterised a seal that is greater in size than the classic grey seal, and therefore they have the ability to shapeshift into human form.

Most of the stories from these islands tell of Selkies luring islanders into the sea and the lovelorn human never returns. There are many theories regarding the origins of the seal folk. It has been suggested that the selkies may have been inspired by real people such as explorers who wore heavy furs and visited Orkney, Shetland, and Faroe. A more supernatural theory is that they are the reincarnations of people lost at sea, or that they are humans trapped in the form of seals.
